Numbers by Ear privacy policy
Last updated: October 13, 2026, for version 2.0
In short
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking and no accounts.
- What you say to Say It Back and the spoken games is recognized on your device. It is never recorded or sent.
- Your answers and settings stay on your device. Your stars, game records and streak sync through your own iCloud, where I can't see them.
- Something reaches me only if you send a report or feedback from the app, and the app shows you exactly what it contains before you send it.
Who is responsible
Numbers by Ear ("the app", formerly Number Sense - Hearing) is made by Vinklair Apps, an independent developer ("I", "me"). For any privacy question, write to vinklair.apps@gmail.com.
Data that stays on your device
The app keeps these on your iPhone or iPad only:
- Your answers: the numbers you were asked and what you answered, which make your stats, stars and trouble spots.
- Settings: your languages, pinned languages, voices, speed, reminder time and similar preferences.
They leave the device only if you share them yourself, for example in a screenshot, or as part of your own device backups. Deleting the app deletes them.
Progress in your iCloud
So that a new iPhone or iPad can carry on where you left off, the app keeps a copy of your stars, game records and recent rounds, your Hundred square and your streak in your private iCloud storage, under your own Apple Account. This is Apple's service, covered by Apple's privacy policy, and I have no access to it. If you are not signed in to iCloud, this progress simply stays on the device.
Microphone and speech recognition
Say It Back and the spoken games (Whale watch, Road trip, Hotel lift and Guess the year) listen to you saying numbers. iOS asks your permission to use the microphone and speech recognition the first time, and you can change your answer at any time in the Settings app.
- Speech is recognized on your device. The app asks iOS for on-device recognition only, so your voice is never sent to Apple or to me. A language that can't be recognized on the device is offered for listening only.
- The audio is used while you speak and then discarded. It is never recorded, stored or sent.
Reports and feedback you choose to send
"Sounded wrong?" on a number, and the feedback card in Settings, let you send me a report. Nothing is sent unless you tap Send, and the app lists every item in the report before you do. A report contains:
- the reason you picked, and your note if you write one;
- for a number: the number and its kind, how it is written out, the text the voice was given (and the sentence, if one was spoken), your first answer or what the app heard you say, the language, the voice and the speed;
- the date, the app version and the iOS version.
The report is stored in the app's iCloud database at Apple, where only I can read it. It does not include your name, your email address or anything else about you; iCloud files it under an identifier that is specific to this app and doesn't tell me who you are. If iCloud isn't available, the app offers to send the same report by email instead, and then I see your email address as with any email.
I use reports only to fix how numbers are read and to improve the app. If you would like a report you sent deleted, write to me.
Reminders
If you turn on the daily reminder, it is scheduled on your device as a local notification. Nothing about it is sent anywhere.
Purchases
Pro is a one-time in-app purchase through the App Store. Apple processes the payment and I never see your payment details. The app asks the App Store on your device whether you have bought Pro, or bought the app before it became free, so that it can unlock Pro for you.
No analytics, ads or tracking
The app contains no analytics, crash reporting or advertising frameworks. What you do in the app is not recorded or monitored by me or by anyone else, and the app never asks to track you across other companies' apps and websites.
Third parties
The only other company involved is Apple, through iCloud, the App Store and the speech recognition and voices built into iOS. I don't sell your data or share it with advertisers, marketing partners or analytics providers.
Children
The app doesn't ask for personal information from anyone, including children. A report contains only what is listed above.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new date at the top.
