Dozens of languages

You know every word. The number still slips past.

A price at the till, a platform change, a phone number read out fast. Every language builds its numbers its own way, and Numbers by Ear teaches yours with the voices already on your iPhone or iPad.

How it works

Four ways to train your ear

1

Hear it, type it

A number is spoken and you type what you heard. Every answer stays on screen written out, so the moment quatre-vingt-dix-sept becomes 97 is the one you remember.

  • Replay it, or hear it again slower
  • Climb a ladder from digits to millions, earning stars
  • Ten right answers a day make your daily goal
2

Learn how numbers are built

Step through any number and hear it, see it written out, and see the pieces it is said in. Each language's building blocks come in order, with notes on the parts that trip learners up.

3

Say it back

See a number and say it aloud. Your speech is recognized on your device, so you see what was heard straight away. Nothing is recorded or sent.

4

Find your trouble spots

Stats show the numbers you mix up, like sixty and seventy, and the ones you only get right slowly. With Pro, Fix This builds a session from exactly those.

Play

Ten games, opened by your stars

Stars from practice open short games in every language. Five are free, Pro adds five more, and in four of them the number you say is your move.

FreeListen

Postman

Hear a house number and deliver the parcel to the right door before the van drives past.

FreeListen

Safe cracker

The voice reads a combination. Type each number to turn the dial, and the gold is yours.

FreeListen

The caller is quick. Mark each number on your card before it rolls out of reach.

FreeSay it

Whale watch

Call out squares on the sea to find a whale, a dolphin and a turtle hiding under the waves.

ProListen

ProSay it

Guess the year

An event is pinned to the wall. Say a year and hear earlier or later until you have it.

Plus Good morning! (Pro), where you set the alarm to the time you hear, and Fill the gaps (free) on your Hundred square.

Questions

Which languages are included?

Every language your iPhone or iPad has a voice for: dozens on a standard install, with regional variants such as Canadian French or Mexican Spanish. Open the language picker in the app to see yours.

Is it really free?

Yes. Plain numbers in every range, prices, Learn, Say It Back, sentences, every voice and five games are free, with no ads. A one-time Pro purchase adds every other kind of number, mixed review, Fix This and five more games. There is no subscription.

I bought the app before. Do I have to pay again?

No. If you bought Number Sense before it became Numbers by Ear and went free, Pro is already yours. The app recognizes your original purchase on its own.

Does Say It Back send my voice anywhere?

No. Speech is recognized on your device. A language without on-device recognition stays in listening mode rather than send anything away.

Will my progress move to a new phone?

Yes. Your stars, game records and streak are kept in your own iCloud, so a new iPhone or iPad carries on where you left off. Your answer history stays on the device.

A number sounds wrong.

Tap "Sounded wrong?" on the Just heard card in the app, or write to me. Every report helps, especially from native speakers.
